AmeriCorps VISTA, lifting people out of poverty since 1965

AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) members bring passion and perseverance where the need is greatest: to organizations that help eradicate poverty. AmeriCorps VISTA members serve as a catalyst for change, living and working alongside community members to meet our nation’s most pressing challenges and advance local solutions.

Benefits of the Program

Living Allowance

The AmeriCorps VISTA program provides a living allowance that enables you to live very frugally, like the community you are serving. The allowance is based on poverty rates for a single individual in your geographic area.

End of Year Benefits

AmeriCorps Members may select either the Segal Education Award or the End of Year Stipend.

Travel Reimbursment

Many AmeriCorps VISTA members move to a new community for their VISTA service. If you are one of them, you maybe eligible to receive financial assistance from the VISTA program for the move.

Segal Education Award

$6,195 that can be used to pay for college or to pay off student loans.  You may receive this twice.

End of Year Stipend

$1,800 cash stipend that is paid at the end of the VISTA Members term of service.

Professional Training

AmeriCorps VISTA training encompasses a range of activities and resources offered by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and your sponsoring organization throughout your term of VISTA service, and includes professional development opportunities you seek out for yourself.  The training experience is an opportunity for you to explore issues surrounding poverty, your community, and AmeriCorps VISTA programming; build community among your fellow VISTA members as well as with your sponsor; and to develop your professional and life skills.

Work Experience

AmeriCorps VISTA is more than a serviceopportunity.  As you are building community, you will also be building your career.  As a capacity-builder, you will be focused on creation and sustainability. You will be gaining professional experience and building skills as you learn, experiment, and adapt to a new environment while delivering outcomes.  You will finish your year of service with an incredibly robust set of skills that can be applied to any professional career.

Rental Assistance

RurAL CAP provides an additional $200 in rental assistance every month, paid directly to the VISTA Member’s Landlord/landlady.
